The project intends to restore an old palatial house in the historic center of Puebla and its conversion as a brand-new multifunctional space. The construction of an additional volume on top of the existing roof –respecting the height restrictions as established by the city planning– further incorporates a private residential program.
The project is arranged following the original primary structure: a massive volume perforated by two inner patios –the historic front and a more recent rear. Straightforward in its lay-out and serene in its materiality, a new superposed piece allows the building to become a neutral container to host shifting programs and functions.
The front part around the main courtyard is renovated to bring back its original luster: stone tiling, light traditional rendering, carpentry and iron works… The rear area, initially an amalgam of latter constructions and courtyards with little historic value, is rearranged around a new extended patio, so as to provide proper sunlight to the backside. Light and almost hidden, a complementary staircase and lift shaft is inserted there to meet the needs of the entire building.
