Turku, with its status as a historic capital and a vibrant nexus of business and culture, transcends the conventional definition of a city, and stands as a testament to the rich tapestry of Finland's narrative. As we traverse through Turku's historical alleys, we find that the city is a living chronicle, a vibrant tribute to Finland's storied past and its journey through time. Turku, the gateway from Sweden, is more than just a harmonious blend of nature and cityscape. It is a living canvas where architectural marvels witness to centuries of evolution.
Urban structure
The Museum stands along the new waterfront, and opensan urban square to the north, extending its activity into the public realm andreceiving all the pedestrian fluxes from Linnanniemi and the new FerryTerminal.
Encountering space and art centre
The Museum is a space for encountering: restaurants, workshopsand an auditorium lay on the street level. But it is also a highly flexiblecontainer for art exhibitions, fully equipped with every needed technology. Thefoyer assumes both conditions as a greenhouse that traps a fragment of theCastle Park. A light and transparent façade wraps all these elements in asingle volume.
Square + Artbox
The project is organised on two levels. The lower oneis a public and permeable street level that hosts the open programs. The upperlevel hosts the Artbox, a container where every museographic layout ispossible. Both levels connect though a vertical greenhouse that traps afragment of the Castle Park.
A memorable foyer
The foyer is the green heart of the Museum, connectingthe city with its ecologies, linking the public and indeterminate uses of thesquare with the specific uses of the Artbox. It is a free access area thatelevates the visitors to different levels through a spiral staircase, agrandstand for encountering, and an interior balcony. Three exterior terracesoverlook the waterfront and the archipelago, the park and the Turku Castle.
